In the west of León province, the Romans brought down whole mountains with water to extract gold. What they left is Las Médulas: a landscape of red peaks, caves and chestnut woods, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
This top-rated guided walk follows the Interior or Valiñas path, a circular route through the old mine, past the outside of the Encantada and Cuevona caves, with the story of the canals that made it all possible.
Sound receivers and visual material help you picture how the mine worked.
Transport isn't included: Las Médulas is about two hours' drive west of León, so you need a car or to stay nearby in the Bierzo. Wear walking shoes. The operator lists it as unsuitable for people over 70.
